Milspec racing fastener parts for aircraft and racing cars. The correct stud length and spring combination for a given panel is determined by the Total material Thickness to be fastened. Total Thickness is the total of both outside and inside panels. Plus, allowances for gaskets, grommets, anti chaffing material, gaps between panels or interference.

 The S spring receptacle's height ("H" dimension) is denoted by it's dash number (i.e. S6-375 is .375" tall).    Any stud and  spring combination can be greatly modified by using the MS-7301 spring adjusting tool. If the S spring is mounted using a weld tab, the thickness of the tab should be included as part of "Total Thickness" calculations.

"W" = the studs head diameter, which tells the stud series. This can also be derived from the stud shank's major diameter. "L" = The studs Grip Length (dash number). Stud Lengths  vary in .050" increments. Dimensional tolerances are +/- .010".

 When locked, the stud's slot or wing will always line up with the rivet holes of the spring receptacle. Therefore, whatever angle you mount the spring, the stud slot or wing will align with it. This is handy for quickly identifying an unlocked fastener when glancing at a panel or to insure that a wing head stud will cause as little airflow turbulence as possible.
